Can trauma to the breast cause cancer?

Can trauma to the breast cause cancer?

The answer is no. There is not a connection between breast cancer and injury or trauma to the breasts. This is one of many, many myths about breast cancer which have arisen over the years. Injury to the breast tissue neither causes breast cancer nor increases your risk of getting it. The truth is that we still do not know the cause of breast cancer.

What sometimes happens is that a woman suffers a trauma to the breast and either examines the breast closely herself or goes to the doctor, who does a clinical breast exam and perhaps orders mammogram. Ultimately, cancer may be discovered. This process may lead some people to believe that breast injury causes breast cancer, but in fact, the outcome was strictly coincidental. The injury led to the detection of breast cancer; it did not cause the cancer.
